7 Reasons to Have Carpets Cleaned Year Round

As the weather warms and people head outdoors, it is important that custodial departments don’t lose sight of what needs to be done inside. There are many reasons why carpets should not be neglected.

Properly cleaning and maintaining carpets:

1. Prolongs the life of carpeting. Regular carpet cleaning using the extraction method can increase the life of carpets significantly, protecting your floor-covering investment.

2. Protects indoor air quality. Carpets trap airborne pollutants; however, eventually those pollutants must be removed in order to protect the carpet and maintain indoor air quality.

3. Makes carpets easier to maintain. Most carpet soiling is made up of dry soils; when carpets are kept thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, most dry soils can be removed with regular vacuuming.

4. Removes spots and stains. As with other soils, spots and stains can attract more soiling. Removing them promptly protects carpeting from damage.

5. Prevents buildup of allergens and bacteria. Moist soiling of carpets can result in the buildup of several unhealthy contaminants.

6. Enhances the appearance of any room. Clean, well-maintained carpets speak volumes about the overall cleanliness of a home or facility.

7. Improves worker morale. Workers feel better about their work environment when it is clean. This includes the carpeting.

Carpet Cleaning Tips

Here are some useful tips for cleaning carpets yourself. Please note, we do not accept any liabilities derived from following this information. So if you kill your carpet don’t blame us!

  • Carpets need to be hoovered once a week and more often in areas of heavy traffic. Frequent hoovering prolongs the life of your carpet by preventing a buildup of gritty particles that can cut carpet fibers. Every few weeks, take a little extra time and use your crevice tool for cleaning around baseboards and radiators and in other hard-to-reach places.
  • To hoover wall-to-wall carpeting, divide the floor into quadrants and hoover an entire quadrant before moving on to the next.
  • Take your time when you hoover a carpet, especially a plush carpet in which dirt is sure to be deeply embedded. One pass with a high-powered upright is not enough. Go over each section of carpeting several times, and work slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground-in dust and dirt.
  • Pay special attention to the areas where people sit and move their feet. Hoovering these areas of heavy traffic with a crisscross pattern of overlapping strokes.
  • Soil retardants can be applied to new carpets or to newly cleaned carpets. Follow manufacturers’ advice. Apply soil retardants only with professional equipment using the recommended application techniques.
  • Add baking soda to the bag in your hoover to fight odours.

Carpet Beetles: Are They The Next Bed Bugs?

Carpet Beetle

An interesting article found in the Village Voice:

Invasion?

The Voice recently wrote about bugs’ inevitable triumph over humankind.

And though it doesn’t look like bed bugs are necessarily going to be the creepy, crawly culprits who enslave us, we have recently learned about another species that comes out while you are asleep and defenseless: carpet beetles.

So what’s the deal?

Writes bed bug expert Marcia Anderson on the EPA’s “Greening the Apple” blog:

“Several months ago I received an e-mail from a city resident who was getting bites at night that she thought were from a spider. Large, and itchy, but with a burning sensation that told her they weren’t mosquito bites. The problem escalated until she had over 40 red welts on her legs. ‘I was getting groups of about 5-20 ‘bites’ every night, and my husband had none, and he wore boxers! Also, after the first few nights, I was wearing heavy sweat pants to bed tucked into my socks, and still found marks!'”

Bed Bugs & You

Bed bugs were a problem that humans thought they had got under control, but recent years have seen a 500% increase in their occurrence. Previously confined to hotels and transport hubs, they are increasingly becoming common in peoples homes, and as they are easily passed from person to person, they can be easily spread. Bed bugs generally emerge at night and draw blood from humans by piercing them with twin tubes.
